The Why for the Word

Beautiful sunset

When I was affiliated with a marketing company one of the leaders made this profound statement, “If you have a big enough WHY then you will figure out HOW to do anything.” This statement intrigued me when studying the word of God which generated my interest in the “WHY” for the Word of God. The focus of this “WHY” question is twofold — Why should I care about the Bible and Why  God wanted the bible written.

The Word of God…

  • is a personal letter from the creator of the heavens and the earth.
  • Framed the Ages.
  • Explains the origin of the earth and of man.
  • Unfolds the story of man’s creation and fall, the promise of a savior, the preservation of the Christ line, the prophecy of Christ’s first coming, his birth, his ministry, his accomplished believing, his crucifixion, his death, his burial, his resurrection, his ascension, his present position seated at the right hand of God and his return for his saints.
  • Reveals how to be born again and contains the operator’s manual for the new creation
  • Contains all things that pertain to life and godliness
  • Explains the rise and expansion of the first-century church
  • Is infinite in wisdom unlike man’s writings which are finite.
  • Restores, Reconciles, Redeems, Reveals,
  • Explains: heaven and hell, Jesus Christ and the Devil, angels and demons,
  • Is the most popular and remarkable literary work in history.
  • Is not a history book but is accurate historically,
  • Is not a Biology book but is accurate biologically
  • Is not an Astronomy book but is accurate astronomically
  • Is not a Geology book but is accurate geologically
  • Is not only factual but truthful – It is Reality!
  • Is the richest source of figures of speech in the world.
  • Reveals the secret to a long life, riches, honor, wisdom, health, peace, etc.
  • Tells us how to live in relationship with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and God.
  • Is the soul food needed to feed our minds.
  • Fits together perfectly even though it was written by over 40 authors over a span of thousands of years.
  • Is the sword of the spirit, the weapon for confronting the devil
  • Explains death and the afterlife which includes our rewards and reigning with Christ
  • Contains the only words which God backs up.

Why should we care about what the Bible has to say about anything?

In the second chapter of Timothy, God informs us not only that the Word of God is profitable but also why it is profitable.

2 Timothy 3

16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

The phrase “given by inspiration of God”  literally means “God-breathed”. This hearkens back to Genesis chapter 2

7And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

Hebrews 4:13a(Webster’s Bible Translation)

For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword,…

God breathed  into His Word and it became living just like he breathed into man and he became a living soul. It’s electrifying that the Word of God is alive. There are multiple writers of the bible but only one author – God.

The Word is useful, helpful, and beneficial because it is alive and imparts life.

Doctrine is the right way to believe.

Reproof is needed for practical error so that we can return to the right way of believing

Correction is needed for doctrinal error. Once practical error is practiced long enough then it becomes doctrinal error. Correction is then needed to return to the right way of believing.

The combined effect of doctrine, reproof and correction is instruction in righteousness.

These are needed so that the man of god can be perfect. In the Greek, this word means to be repaired or prepared. It’s used for a ship preparing to get underway.  When a ship crosses the ocean it has to be prepared for the unknown. This means the ship needs to be in top notch condition, outfitted with food and supplies, and the crew needs to be in good physical and mental condition. Since a Home Depot will not be available then extra materials need to be stored.

Therefore, the word of God will equip the man of god by repairing and preparing him for performing good works.

Here is reworked version of the verse in 2 Timothy 3:16

16All scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for right believing, for returning to right believing after practical error, for returning to right believing after doctrinal error, which is instruction in how to believe rightly:

17So that the man of God may be equipped, fully equipped for every good work.

The Bereans were praised for studying the bible to see if what was being taught was in alignment with the scriptures.

Acts 17:11

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily to see if those things were so.

God magnified his Word above all of his works.

Psalm 138:2b

“…for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.”

The Word of God is superior to what man thinks, says, or does.

The Word of God explains how to be saved from this dark world and saved for eternity.

The Bible unveils the most powerful force on this planet – The Love of God.

But why did God ensure that his Word would be meticulously written, perfectly assembled and preserved?

The God that created the heavens and the earth,

The God that slung the stars in space,

The God that expelled the Devil and one-third of the angels from Heaven,

The God that created the birds, animals, and fishes,

The God that created the first man and woman,

The God that miraculously provided comfort, food, and drink to 2.5 million men, women, and children for 40 years,

The God that provided the Savior for all of mankind – including you and I,

The God that “so loved that he gave his only son”,

The God that promised that we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

This God, the father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, wants fellowship with each person because

He has a Why for His Word – Love!!!!
