He is Risen!

Sunrise

“HE IS RISEN!” should be our victory cry. God raised Jesus Christ from the dead so that we could be a part of his family after the day of Pentecost –. that he [Jesus] might be the firstborn among many siblings (that’s us). He was raised after three days and three nights.

For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. [Matthew 12:40 KJV]

There are 21 verses (listed below) in the Gospels that state that Jesus will be raised on the third day. Jesus made the statement 2 times in the first person and 11 times in the third person. The remaining 8 times were stated by others. I found it odd that Jesus would speak in the third person concerning his resurrection. That is because it is a figure of speech called an “Apostrophe”. This figure places emphasis on the subject, Jesus.

God left no doubt that He would raise Jesus on the third day (and He did). Jesus spent the next seven weeks on the earth in his resurrection body.

Matthew 27:57-66

When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:

Between 3pm and 6pm Joseph of Arimathaea visits Pilate, the Roman Governor.

He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

Joseph was a planner. He carved out a tomb in a rock where rich people are buried. He gave Jesus an improper burial by omitting embalming with spices. Why would Joseph not follow Jewish custom concerning burials? He believed that Jesus would be raised on the third day.

And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make [it] as sure as ye can.

So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

The Pharisees were concerned that a hoax would arise by stealing Jesus body and claiming that he was raised from the dead. Pilate concurred and set a watch over the tomb.

Matthew 28:1-

In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first [day] of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead [men].

At about sunrise on Sunday the two Mary’s visited the tomb. The earth shook and then an angel rolled back the stone and sat down. The tomb keepers were paralyzed and slept.

And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

The angel said “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.” They are reminded  that they have heard this before. Go tell the disciples and you will see Jesus at Galilee.

And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

The angel was right about where they would see Jesus.

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.

Jesus arose with a job to do. His mission was to equip the twelve apostles that he chose for the day of Pentecost.  They are still not ready after all of their time together. Jesus was constantly in teacher mode: instructing, reproving, and correcting. He will now spend 40 days completing his work before his ascension.

He is risen! We can rejoice that he did tell the truth that God would raise him on the third day. Also believing that he is risen is a requirement for being saved.

Romans 10:9-10

That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.

For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
