38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again.
This is a popular tithing message that I have heard countless times, even from myself. It is very tempting to give to get. However, the context has nothing to do with anything material. Here are the previous verses.
35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
36 Be you, therefore, merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
There it is! Give love. Give mercy. Give forgiveness. Give grace. When you give these things then you shall receive love, mercy, forgiveness, and grace. Aren’t all of these things superior to money? God help me in my pursuit of your thoughts and ways.
